Anyone who has ever tried to buy garden gates before know the difficulties they are face. These hindrances we even more prominent 10 years ago before the explosion of the internet.

Whether it be a metal gate, iron gate or wood gate their just isn’t any specialist garden gate shops anywhere. You could go to your local garden centre but if they are one of the rare ones to stock a garden product like a garden gate then they will most likely be a weak gate that will not with stand a good breeze.

Some fence shops sometimes sell garden gates but they are usually rough un-decorative garden gates that just serve a purpose as oppose to enhancing your garden. The other option is to buy some wood and make your own small gates but not all of us are skilled joiners and even if we are the results will not be as good as an experienced wooden garden gate maker could create.

Luckily the internet has now made it economically viable for joinery shops to make quality garden gates that they can sell nationwide instead of relying on the few local customers. These expert carpenters can not only make decorative wooden garden gates but they will be able to make large garden gates that will be ideal for large garden gates such as wooden side gates or security gates.

This is a fantastic new development for any keen gardener and has taken the trouble out of buying a garden gate.

Ornamental fountains, outdoor statues, wooden gates and other garden accessories are becoming very popular in the United Kingdom. The soothing, breathtaking beauty of garden fountains is enhanced by aquatic plants, as well as the play of light and shadows reflected in the water.

Fountains and large statues can be found in private estates, public parks, hotel landscapes, mall courtyards, restaurants, apartment balconies, and even inside homes and apartments in areas with colder climates. Fountain and garden designs have become extremely artistic. Some prefer to extend the view of the water into their living rooms where observing the calming water flow becomes a restful evening activity.

Research conducted on ornamental garden accessories has been few and far between until recently; therefore most of the information at hand is taken from related research categories and practical observation.

Location of the outdoor water features is critical, not only for the owner’s enjoyment but also to maintain and properly manage the structure. For something a bit more complex, such as pools of water, sunlight is necessary for photosynthesis by water plants including algae, which allows oxygen for the pool. Abundant oxygen means a steady and reliable environment for fish and other creatures in the pool.

Position your pool to avoid harsh sunlight during the day, especially in the warmest months. Fish can be affected by elevated temperatures unless shade is provided by water plants. For indoor pools, lights are available allowing simulation of natural daylight.

Several advantages to placing pools and fountains within view of the home are:

• To boost human enjoyment
• To make supervision of children playing near the garden fountain or pool easy, make sure to always control children’s access to these areas as well
• To aid in keeping away predators, such as raccoons, birds, deer, snakes, or even human thieves
• To lessen the expense of pipes and pumping which are usually lower for pools and outdoor water features built or placed close to the home

Pools are generally expensive to construct and maintain, although many rookies begin with little expense by using an old bath tub or wading pool. Labor costs for most pools typically range from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the pool’s particular features and how long construction takes. Building costs can be reduced by doing the work yourself or acting as back-up labor for the professionals you hire. Better yet, you can choose the more affordable option, outdoor waterfalls or garden fountains!

Part of the fun in being the owner of a garden fountain or an ornamental pool is creating the overall look of the outdoor water feature and its surroundings. The objects used can be as limitless as your imagination. Consider stones of different colors and sizes, large waterfalls, windmills, bridges, water plants, and surrounding flower scenery. Some garden artists create spaces using arches, gates, small roads and paths, and gazebos.

The beauty of fountains and pools is that even though they are mass produced, what you decide to do with them, where you place them, and how they are perceived, is left solely in the hands of the owner. The possibilities are endless…now is the time to get started!

When choosing the size of the timber gate for your garden you have a few variables to take into consideration. You have the obvious height and width choices which are primarily dictated by the size and width of the gap you have to plug with your garden gate but sizes can also be chosen based on aesthetic reasons.

As well as well as gap and aesthetic reasons you also have security issues to take into account which will be an influence on the third dimension of your timber gate, the depth. One other deciding factor on the width of your garden gate is cost, which unless you are extremely wealthy, will be judgement based on a balancing act between necessity and funds available.

First of all we shall look at what many will see as the most important factor, the gap for which your timber gate is to fit. Now from my experience this is actually one of the least important things to take into consideration when choosing the size of timber gate you wish to go for. There are many things you can do to make room for your garden gate to fit into the area you wish to have it. Some of these could be trimming back a hedge, knocking down part of a wall or even taking a few fence panels down to make room for your timber gates. By the same token you can also extend a fence or wall and plant new hedges or plants to fill a gap should a slimmer garden gate be your gate of preference.

Although making space for your timber gates may be simple enough, once you have created the required gate you then have to make sure that you measure the gap correctly. If you do not get this step right you could have a hand made wooden gate made and then have to mess about re-adjusting the gap so that it fits. When measuring you gap make sure that you allow for gate posts if you are having them to go with your timber gate too.

Now for the aesthetic part which is what I would class as the most important aspect when choosing the size of your garden gate. If you only have a small garden then a 6ft by 6ft timber gate is just going to be too over powering for the layout of your garden. A nice delicate 3ft garden gate would be just the ticket for a petite garden whereas a large 5 bar timber gate would look lovely at the bottom of a garden with a long drive.

Tall garden gates are more suitable as passage way gates where they are up against the side of the house. Having such a timber gate in a normal garden with a smaller wall running around it just would not set the scene of a beautiful garden at all.

These taller timber gates do offer more security though and if you want a gate to keep intruders out then these may be the type for you. A thicker gate would also stop would be intruders gaining access to your premise if they were to try brute force as a means of trespass. Thicker garden gates are also ideal for pet gates which need to with stand the test of dogs and such like jumping on them all day long.

The final decision you have to weigh up is whether each of the above is worth the extra cost that they would take. Taking all of the above into consideration should give you all the answers you need to select the right sized timber gate for your particular need.

The history of the herb garden:

Garden patches with fences and wooden garden gates around are usually dedicated for growing different types of vegetables, flowers, fruits and medicines. In the medieval world, there were a number of monks and nuns who acquired special medical knowledge. They indulged in the growth of the necessary herbs in specialist gardens or herb gardens to ensure the easy availability of the medicine components. The typical herbs grown include angelica, rosemary, sage, thyme, bay, dill amd oregano. The advance of medical and botanical sciences during the renaissance witnessed the monastic herb gardens developing into a major investment. Herb gardens experienced a revival with the initiatives of a number of dedicated historians and horticulturists.

Modern herb gardens:

The modern herb gardens are sometimes purely functional and yet at times, just ornamental! Horticulturists now use the cultivation of herbs as part of a design in the containing boxes and raised garden beds. Today, the development and popularity of alternate medication are encouraging people to grow the herbs themselves, instead of buying them in dried variations from the market, especially if they are imported. The herb garden enables the owner to use fresh herbs, like in the treatment of bronchitis and acne. Herbs are not at all troublesome to grow and the overlap between herbs that thrive in outdoor gardens versus those that thrive inside is taken care of in the presence of proper care.

Herb gardening care:

Herbs are very easy to grow. If they are potted or planted in the proper soil, they can thrive with little or no additional support. In fact, it is interesting to note that herbs do well in earth that would be considered poor for other plants! Herb gardening care rarely involves a regular supply of fertilizer of any kind. Herbs are known to be drought tolerant and re-growth is as good as a part of their life. This is the main reason why it is very easy to pick herbs for the outdoors and some for the living room or deck. Certain herbs and their potting requirements are given below for consideration and to understand the truth behind the claim that herbs are easy to tend to.

Bay Laurel:

Bay Laurel is a herb from the Mediterranean and thrives in sunshine and dry weather conditions. This herb can be planted indoors or outdoors, with good drainage if it is being potted. You need to fill a pot with pre-dampened soil. Ensure that the container chosen is large enough to prevent a root bound condition. Initially, the herb needs to be placed in an area where the sapling will get 6 hours per day or more of sun.

Chives:

Chives thrive in a pot, as well as in a regular herb garden patch. The herb soak up heat and sprouts beyond a foot. In time, the plant bears beautiful purple flowers. Chive saplings need to be potted bunched together. When clipping, you need to clip the leaves near the base.

Parsley:

Parsley is an excellent indoor herb. This herb needs to be potted to sustain it year after year. It is much easier to grow parsley from plants rather than seeds. New leaves grow from the center and hence when trimming, you need to trim the outer leaves to keep the plant healthy.

Lavender:

Lavender needs to stay on the plant till the time for the potpourri or perfume preparation is at hand. Lavender makes great ground cover and imparts a lovely fragrance to the existing garden that completely complements the beautiful pinkish-purple flowers. This herb requires very little care, except for well drained soil.

The herbs can be grown even in a small plot of 4 by 6 feet. Other than cooking and for medicinal properties, the herbs are also grown for the pleasant aromatic foliage and the beauty of the flowers. Herbs are liberally used to garnish salads and perk up flavors of vegetables and meat.

Many homeowners are hesitant to go with double glazed windows as they are unsure what the benefits are and why they should pay extra for them. However, doubled glazed windows have a number of advantages over single paned windows, and are amongst the more popular “home makeovers” available to a property owner.

First and foremost is their money-saving ability. Double glazed windows are composed of two panes glass with an area of “dead air” in between them (normally filled with a harmless, inert gas like argon or krypton, which have better insulation properties than normal air) that helps increase insulation and keep more warm air inside your home when closed. Due to this, they are one of the most energy-efficient windows available today, and according to many experts and government agencies in Canada, the United States, Australia and Great Britain you can save an average of 25-50% on your annual heating and cooling costs by switching from single pane windows to double glazed windows.

Secondly, as double glazed windows have two layers of glass, they are more secure. Burglars often gain entry via windows due to the inherent security weaknesses in them. However, it is harder for an intruder to enter your home through double glazed windows due to the thicker panes, and it also decreases the chance of shattering if a hard object comes into contact with them, the increased density being able to absorb greater impacts. To make sure double glazed windows are very secure, many companies are installing them with strong frames and added security measures by default, such as hard-lipped security beads and friction hinges (here is a good example of the security features offered by double glazing companies). These features alone could save you hundreds of pounds in expenses and insurance.

Naturally, a lot of people are concerned about the expense of installing double glazed windows, however the long term savings and peace of mind they can bring more than makes up for any initial costs involved.

The beauty of living in countryside is found while using the Garden Furniture. In the core of Illinois, there is an attractive furniture outlet that offers a wide range of Garden Furniture which gives our house the realistic experience of living in countrside. There are retail shops full of accessories like urns, planters ,decorative items, gazebos, arbors, garden gates, rustic fencing, etc which can be bought to make your patio look realistic. The quaint shop also had their gadgets featured on a TV program named ‘Trading Spaces’. The rustic iron chandelier was also featured on Home & Garden TV on the program Landscape Smart and the Woman’s Day magazine which was issued on 2003 also featured their Cast Iron Urns.

While we are there, we would enjoy the beauty of living in the countryside with two acres of land which is gardened and a small path leading to the cottage. Not only outside , the rustic garden items are also displayed inside one of the rooms of the cottage. The cottage which is built in the 18th century depicts the early life of Americans on the farm which is beautiful scenario right in the middle of our country. Authentic antiques which are about a century old can be seen in the cottage and in the gardens. The rustic garden is unique with benches, chairs, tables, arbors, etc which depicts early America. In the Victorian period, the garden area was covered with antiques which delighted almost everyone. Thus, the mixture of different eras completes anyone’s rustic garden furniture. Many of the age old items are displayed in our catalog for those who cannot directly visit our cottage which can be accesed by internet.

There is a well-known market place called Shipshewana present in the gentle lands in southern Indiana. This marketplace in Shipshewana is maintained by Amish. It opens every spring and is closed at the end of it. This is a much valued place to visit as there is plenty of antiques and other items for us to find. As we enter the market we can see many unique craft shops which are maintained by Amish women. There are many interesting shops like the Rooster shop which sells milk cans, weather vanes, etc which are perfect to be kept in our garden. The Amish have also made another marketplace away from the town on the vast fields.

As we enter the marketplace we can see the homegrown veggies and the Amish barnyard which offers the delicious barbaque pork sandwiches which makes our mouth watering. Then, as we move to the middle of the market, we could see the exotic garden furnitures carved by Amish men. Every items featured in the market are hanmade by the Amish people in their own shops present in their homes. These garden furniture which are made of maple, cherry, oak, teak woods, etc would surely make our garden and patio remarkable and wonderful. People who are looking for antique items and rustic furniture made of prime woods must definitely visit this place.

Windows are a vital part of any decorating style but they are often forgotten. It’s not hard to understand how something so ordinary as windows might be overlooked. Yet, wooden windows are essentially a central part of your interior design. To really make your room design wonderful, try implementing some of the window decorating tips below.

The right window treatments can work wonders to transform your decorating theme. For example, if your decorating theme has a wood based feeling - such as plantation or rustic style, adding wood blinds instead of curtains or drapes will help keep the windows in style with the rest of the decor. Light filtering through slightly drawn wooden blinds not only offers a soft, hazy look, but the way the sun reflects off wood can also give your room a lovely glow.

If your design style requires a simple design, then you might consider vertical blinds for your windows. You can purchase them in several colors and styles making them a good alternative to heavier looking fabric window treatments. To clean them, just wipe them down - no stressing about messing with taking them down and trying to put them back up again.

Another window decorating tip which is becoming extremely popular is that of side tabs and scallops. This approach allows you to allow light in and still dress up the side of the window. Using a scalloped valance, you should add charm to any window.

You don’t need to stick to the same type of material in window treatments - making the most of a couple of different varieties can make your decor appealing. Don’t be afraid to mix fabrics with wood Bamboo shades sitting behind stylish drapes or curtains make an excellent alternative to just using one or another, and helps to enhance even the most basic and plain window.

If your windows are of a wooden framed design, then sand them down and redecorate with a different shade of wood stain. It’s no decorators secret that a fresh coat of paint will make your windows look like new. Accent your window design by adding fashionable safety locks for additional security as well as style.

Next time you redecorate, don’t forget these window decorating tips when it comes time for your window treatments. Whether you merely add a few touches or create a whole new look on your windows, they are a pivotal element of any design theme.

Log cabins are a great way to add extra space to your home. With a wide range of woods and layouts, there is a building to meet everyone’s needs. Timber log cabins will also blend in with other elements in your garden such as timber gates and timber fences.

As we are becoming more environmentally aware sales of log cabins has increased greatly. These lovely buildings are normally much cheaper to construct than normal bricks and mortar constructions, and typically need less planning consent.

Wood buildings are beautiful in their design and construction, and nearly everyone is impressed by the feeling they give, inside and out. They can be used for a great range of buildings, including:

Summer houses - a beautiful way of adding extra buildings to your garden. Especially good if you have a swimming pool and enjoy spending time in your garden.

Extra bedrooms - a cost effective way of adding extra bedrooms to your home. It’s much cheaper to add bedrooms outside the property than inside.

Extra property - if you have large amounts of space on your property imagine adding an entirely new building. Great for when family stay, and also for housing growing kids.

Garage - imagine a garage made of wood, rather than concrete. Adapting the interior for storage is much easier with a wood based building.

Storage - add extra buildings to your property to store gardening equipment, motorbikes, camping gear, bikes and just about anything else. As your family grow, you can easily add more buildings as required.

Offices - if you work from home, imagine having a log cabin office right next to your home. I have spoken with many designers who have found their creativity greatly increased by working from a wood based building, rather than one of traditional construction. Having a separate office from the house encourages better separation of home life from work life.

Holiday homes - many companies and individuals use log cabins as holiday homes which they lease out during vacation times. The original build cost is less than a concrete building, and normally yields greater rental value.

Wood buildings have the same interior finish as a traditional build. Lights, electrics, double glazed windows, central heating, and everything else you imagine in a home. Fitting time and cost is normally less than a concrete build, as wood is easier to work with. There is a enormous range of materials to use for the construction, including woods for the frame, interior and exterior finishes, floors, and walls.

Many people decide on using environmentally friendly materials such as straw bales as wall insulation. Not only more natural than synthetic materials, but more efficient, cheaper and much better for the environment.

North Coast Log Cabins design and build log cabins in Cornwall & Devon. With more than 10 years of experience, we are passionate about the buildings we design and make.

Fences and gates are a great way to add both a unique touch to the aesthetical value of your property, and it can serve many practical functions as way. The following is a quick overview of the options available and things to keep in mind when shopping for a wooden garden gate.

A garden gate or side gate is often intended to protect certain areas, to keep kids or pets out of trouble, for keeping away possible intruders, or simply for privacy.

However, garden gates also give the first impression to people visiting your home and is thus an important element for the home improvement buff to consider. With a little bit of creativity a garden gate can make even a rather ordinary fence stand out from the crowd.

Today you can choose from a wide variety of professionally designed gates or, if you are the do-it-yourself type, you could simply build a unique gate for yourself. The gate can be as basic or as advanced as you wish - an automatic gate at the front of your driveway or a classic little wooden gate.

The purpose will dictate what kind of gate you will be used, and with lower prices for devices like automatic gate openers more and more people are now installing gates on the front of their driveway. These are usually opened by remote control or automatically as your car pulls in to the driveway. Naturally they can also be locked, preventing unwanted visitors from driving all the way up to your porch.

Unless you build an entrenched wall you will naturally not be able to make break in’s impossible, but it might still be that little extra that makes potential thieves leave your house in peace.

From the aesthetical point of view, there are many small and not so small options to consider. The style of the gate itself should obviously fit the scenario and you might opt for anything from a regal looking, specially designed wrought iron gate to a traditionally simplistic wooden gate.

Regardless of the type of gate you have, or it’s use, gate latches is yet another way to give it a certain type if stylistic flavour. There is a huge selection available, often at a relatively low cost. Even a rather ordinary gate may be enhanced and made unique by installing a specially selected gate latch.

A garden gate might be a small detail in itself. But it can definitely be highly practical in operation as well as a decorative addition to the outside of your property.

Cleaning windows- you should consider the steps below to ensure that your glass is clean and staying clean. First take a bucket and fill it with warm water, and add a window cleaning detergent of your choice. Next, you should remove all window screens or decorations to ensure that you hit all the dirty spots on the glass. You should also consider cleaning the screens, by taking a damp cloth and wiping them down. This will prevent dirt from returning to the clean glass. In addition remove all gunk, such as spider webs, dead bugs, and leaves. This step should be done while with a dry cloth, or each a vacuum hose. Once you have down the steps above you should wipe down the windowsill with a damp sponge. This makes not only glass look cleaner, but the entire room. Next dampen your cloth in the bucket filled with solution. Follow this step by wiping your window; starting from the top left corner and making an “s” motion to the bottom right corner. After you have completed this stroke, use a different, dry cloth, to remove any steaks left behind. Repeat these steps until you are satisfied with your job. It is important not to use paper towel because they tend to leave behind unwanted steaks, and particles of paper that attract dust. Next it is important to dry the window and screen completely to ensure that your cleaning will last. If you are using a squeegee, make sure the window is not indirect sunlight, this to will also leave streaks.

Removing shower glass soap scum: Shower scum is not only unattractive and unwelcoming to visitors, its very unsanitary. To remove the soap scum fill a bucket with vinegar and let it sit on the glass shower door. Let the vinegar sit on the glass, then with a damp sponge remove the vinegar. The soap scum should disappear before your eyes. To neutralize the smell of vinegar, you could add lemon juice to the mixture. Make sure you dry the window with new, clean, dry cloth.
